Welcome to the VAAM!

The Association for General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM) unites about 3500 microbiologically oriented scientists from Germany and neighboring countries. The VAAM promotes scientific information exchange and cooperation among its members with the aim of implementing research results in microbiology for the benefit of society and the environment.
VAAM members also serve as valued contacts for questions from the public.

The most important areas of work of the VAAM are:

  • the large annual conference provides a platform for all areas of microbiology;
  • 19 special groups with their own symposia or workshops on specific microbiological topics;
  • the scientific and member journal BIOspektrum, published seven times a year;
  • the promotion of young scientists through doctoral prizes, VAAMentoring, travel grants and reduced fees for participation in VAAM meetings and international conferences;
  • the online lecture series VAAM Industry-Academia Panel on current topics in applied microbiology;
  • the promotion of young scientists in academia and industry by scientific awards: VAAM Research Award and VAAM Innovation Award;
  • the cooperation with other related scientific societies, e.g. DGHM, GBM, GASB, GfG, DECHEMA and the VBIO;
    participation in national and international committees and commissions;
